Cannes Lions 2024: Film winners /
The Grands Prix go to Orange’s WoMen’s Football and Sydney Opera House’s Play It Safe

/Two Film Grands Prix have been awarded at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. WoMen’s Football for Orange by Marcel, Paris, won its second Grand Prix (it won the Entertainment Lions for Sport Grand Prix on Tuesday), and the Sydney Opera House won for Play It Safe, a film by The Monkeys, Sydney.
The jury took a purist approach this year, said jury president Tor Myhren, VP marketing communications, Apple. ‘We decided not to let the case studies play a huge role in this.’ They were also careful to not let great ideas compensate for bad films – in the end, they chose two winners that represented both strong ideas and quality filmmaking.
Speaking of WoMen’s Football, Myhren said: ‘Sometimes the idea wins out over everything. It’s not a perfect film. The craft isn’t perfect [in terms of fonts and title cards]. But it’s so good and it makes you feel so much. To see it is to love it. It was a very easy decision.’
Play It Safe, he said, was an amazing film. ‘What we fell in love with immediately was the celebration of the creative spirit. It’s a celebration of brave ideas and taking gigantic risks in the face of criticism and controversy and cultural norms.’
