Argentinian delivery app Pedidos Ya wins the Grand Prix in Mobile for its World Cup Delivery campaign

The Grand Prix in Mobile at the 2023 Cannes Lions festival was awarded to delivery app Pedidos Ya for its campaign that tricked Argentinians into thinking that they had mistakenly been sent a delivery.

In fact, users were being notified about when the Fifa World Cup trophy would arrive in Argentina following the country’s victory on 18 December. The campaign was developed by Gut, Buenos Aires.

Shannon Washington, US chief creative officer at R/GA and the jury president of the Mobile category, commended the Grand Prix winner for beginning a campaign ‘with something we unanimously hate – a notification’. Washington said that the campaign used ‘mobile tech to tap into the heart and soul of the nation’. She explained, ‘In Argentina, football is life.’

The technology behind the campaign was ‘brutally simple’ she said, ‘but the combination of how and why is what made it incredibly special’. Washington told Contagious that she was looking for breakthrough creativity rather than breakthrough technology when it came to the top campaigns: ‘If you were to look at the mobile category through the lens of just breakthrough technology, the category would be incredibly small.’

Washington told Contagious that she had initially expected the Grand Prix would go to Peruvian supermarket Plaza Vea’s Redesigning for E-nclusion website for people in rural areas with poor internet connection. While the campaign eventually won a Bronze Lion, Washington said that it served as a reminder that ‘We can't forget that there's always an opportunity for innovation [within] existing technology.’
